GENERAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR SECE SERVICES

Your eligibility for SECE services are dependant on your student status. Please note that this is a general interpretation of eligibility. Special circumstances should be addressed with appropriate SECE staff.

Students employed on campus must be enrolled at least half-time. This is generally defined as follows:

  • All undergraduate & unclassified graduate students 6 credits
  • Classified graduates 4 credits
  • All 700 Thesis and 800 Dissertation candidates 1 credit

International students are required to carry a full-time course load in accordance to federal regulations. Students must consult with their ISS counselor for special considerations.

All students must maintain satisfactory academic progress to remain eligible to work.

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for undergraduates, community college, and law students.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 for graduate students.
  • Some schools and colleges within UH may have a different definition of satisfactory academic progress for their students.

Students who do not meet the general SECE eligibility requirements may request that an exception be granted.

  • All exceptions will be reviewed and determined on a case-by-case basis and are likely to require an in-person consultation with appropriate SECE staff.
  • Students should be prepared to provide supporting information and justification when meeting with SECE staff.
  • A student in his/her last semester enrolled less than half-time may be granted an exception to work.
  • Student must provide written verification from the Academic Advisor confirming upcoming graduation and that current courses being taken will fulfill graduation requirements.

Incoming UHM Students

Programs such as Federal Work Study (FWS), Internship, & Cooperative Education have additional eligibility requirements. Contact SECE for more information.

Incoming Classified: Fall and Spring semester students may begin employment during the interim period prior to official enrollment (summer or winter break). Students wanting to work during the summer need not enroll in credit courses to be eligible for employment.

Incoming Unclassified: Fall and Spring semester students may begin employment upon official enrollment (first day of instruction and tuition payment). Students wanting to work during the summer must enroll in a minimum of 1 credit per session at UHM.

All Incoming students must: Begin searching for jobs in the sece on-line system after obtaining a UH Username and password.

Plan to enroll at UHM at least half time (6 credits) in the upcoming semester. International students must carry a fulltime course load in accordance with federal regulations (Students must see their ISS Counselor for special consideration).

*Note: Incoming students may begin searching for jobs starting May 9 (2 weeks prior to the start of Summer Session 2005). Students must work with SECE to obtain an override.

 

Classified UHM Students

Classified students of UHM are generally eligible for employment through programs offered by SECE. Programs such as Federal Work Study (FWS), Internships, and Cooperative Education have additional eligibility requirements. Contact SECE for more information.  

All Classified UHM students must:

  • Be enrolled at UHM at least half-time (undergraduates: 6 credits; graduate students: 4 credits or 1 credit of 700/800 level course).
    • Continuing, classified students are allowed to work during the summer and winter break without having to enroll in courses. However, proof of registration in the upcoming semester will be required.
    • Students enrolled at multiple campuses must have partial or full enrollment at their Primary Campus.
  • Begin searching for jobs in the SECE on-line system after obtaining a UH Username and password. International students must carry a fulltime course load in accordance with federal regulations (Students should see their ISS Counselor for special consideration).

 

Unclassified UHM Students

Unclassified students of UHM are generally eligible for employment only through the University Jobs (on-campus) and the Non-University Jobs (off-campus) programs. Contact SECE for more information.

 

All Unclassified UHM students must:

  • Begin searching for jobs in the sece on-line system after obtaining a UH Username and password.
  • Enroll at UHM at least half-time (undergraduates and graduate students: 6 credits) at UHM. International students must carry a fulltime course load in accordance with federal regulations (Students must see their ISS Counselor for special consideration).
  • Refrain from working during academic rest periods (Spring and Winter Breaks).
  • Become classified or refrain from employment after working 3 semesters as an unclassified student. The 3-semester limitation does not include summer sessions.

*Note: Unclassified students employed through the University Jobs program must enroll at UHM for at least 1 credit during the entire summer period that they are employed.

 

International UHM Students

International students are generally eligible for employment through the University Jobs (on-campus) and the Cooperative Education programs. The Cooperative Education program has additional eligibility requirements, including proper authorization from International Student Services (ISS). Non-University (off-campus) employment may only be obtained with proper USCIS (formerly INS) work authorization. Contact SECE for more information.

 

All International students must:

  1. Begin searching for jobs in the sece on-line system after obtaining a UH Username and password.
  2. Consult with ISS (J1 Visa students consult their sponsors) about applying for a Social Security Number.
  3. Be enrolled full-time (undergraduates: 12 credits; graduates: 8 credits; Unclassified: 12 credits).

 

Other UH System Students

Student from other UH campuses are generally eligible only for the University Jobs program (UHM campus jobs). Students should inquire with their home campus about programs such as Non-University, Internships, and Cooperative Education.

All Community College, UHWO, & UHH students must:

  1. Enroll at least half time (6 credits) at a UH system campus.
    • Continuing, classified students are allowed to work during the summer and winter break without having to enroll in courses. However, proof of registration in the upcoming semester will be required.
    • Students enrolled at multiple campuses must have partial or full enrollment at their Primary Campus.
  2. Begin searching for University jobs in the sece on-line system after obtaining a UH Username and password.

 

UHM Summer-Only Students

UHM Summer-Only students are eligible for employment through the University Jobs (on-campus) and the Non-University Jobs (off-campus) Program. Students may begin their job search after obtaining a UH Username. However, employment may not begin until the start of the summer class(es) for which they are enrolled. Contact SECE for more information.

 

All Summer Only students must:

  1. Begin searching for jobs in the sece on-line system after obtaining a UH Username and password.
  2. Enroll at UHM for a minimum of 1 credit per summer session at UHM. Students who wish to work the entire summer must enroll for the entire summer term.
  3. End employment on the last day of the summer class(es).

 

Graduating Students

Students in their final semester may be granted an exception to work with a reduced course load if remaining courses fulfill their graduation requirements. Graduating students may not work beyond commencement day and must be terminated after receiving their final paycheck.

If a student is re-entering with classified status and would like to continue employment, acceptance into the new degree program will have to be verified by SECE.
